# Speed to Lead: Why Lubbock Businesses Lose Jobs in the First Hour

By Chase Powell · October 8, 2026 · Process & Automation

Most Lubbock business owners I talk to think they have a lead problem. They want more calls, more form fills, more traffic.

When we actually dig in, the problem is almost never the number of leads. It's what happens in the first hour after a lead comes in.

## What the research actually says

In 2011, _Harvard Business Review_ published a study called "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads." The researchers looked at how quickly more than 2,000 companies responded to web inquiries, and then at how response time affected results across more than a million leads.

Two findings have stuck with me for over a decade:

- **The average company took about 42 hours to respond**, and roughly 23% never responded at all.
- **Companies that reached out within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify the lead** as companies that waited even one hour longer — and more than 60 times as likely as companies that waited a day or more.

That study is fifteen years old. Customers have only gotten less patient since then.

## What this looks like on a Tuesday in Lubbock

Picture a homeowner off 98th Street whose AC quits in July. They search, open three tabs, and fill out the form on all three sites. Or they call the first number, get voicemail, and call the second.

Whoever calls back first usually gets the job. Not the one with the best reviews. Not the one with the nicest website. The one who answered.

It's the same for a dentist taking new patients, a law office with a consultation form, or a roofer after a hailstorm. The buyer is ready _right now_, and "right now" doesn't last.

## Why good businesses are slow

Slow follow-up is rarely laziness. It's usually one of these:

1. **The owner is the follow-up system.** You're on a job site, in an appointment, or under a sink. Leads wait until you're free.
2. **Leads land in five different places.** Website form to one inbox, Facebook messages to your phone, Google Business Profile messages to an app nobody checks, voicemails to a carrier mailbox.
3. **Nobody owns it.** The front desk thinks sales has it. Sales thinks the front desk has it.
4. **After-hours is a black hole.** Plenty of inquiries come in evenings and weekends, exactly when no one is watching.

None of those are marketing problems. They're process problems. That's why more ad spend doesn't fix them. It just pours more water into a leaky bucket.

## A simple speed-to-lead system

You don't need an enterprise call center. Here's the setup we put in place for local businesses, roughly in order of impact.

### 1. Put every lead in one place

Every form, call, text, Facebook message and Google Business Profile message should land in a single CRM inbox. If you can't see all your leads on one screen, you can't respond to them fast.

### 2. Send an instant, human-sounding reply

The moment a lead comes in, send a text (and an email) that confirms you got it and tells them what happens next. Something like:

> "Hi Sarah, this is Mike with ABC Plumbing — got your request about the water heater. I'm finishing a job and will call you within 20 minutes. If it's an emergency, reply URGENT."

This alone stops a lot of people from calling your competitor.

### 3. Use missed-call text-back

When you can't pick up, an automatic text goes out within seconds: "Sorry we missed you — how can we help?" Most people will text back. Now you have a conversation instead of a voicemail they'll never leave.

### 4. Let AI handle the first few questions

This is where practical AI earns its keep. A well-set-up assistant can answer basic questions (hours, service area, general pricing), collect the details you need, and book the appointment straight onto your calendar — at 10 p.m. on a Saturday. It shouldn't pretend to be you, and it should hand off to a person for anything that matters.

### 5. Build a follow-up sequence for the ones who go quiet

Not everyone is ready on day one. A short sequence of texts and emails over the next two weeks catches the "I'm still getting quotes" crowd without anyone having to remember to follow up.

### 6. Measure it

Track one number every week: **median time to first response.** If it's measured in hours today, watch what happens to your close rate when it drops to minutes.

## Where to start this week

If you only do one thing, do this: **fill out your own website form and call your own number after hours.** Time how long it takes to hear back, and notice where the lead actually goes. Most owners are surprised.

Then fix the biggest gap first — usually an instant reply plus missed-call text-back. It's a small project with an outsized payoff.
